Greg Lais, MBA, founder and Executive Director, has managed the organization's growth and development for nearly than 30 years. He is nationally recognized as a pioneer of outdoor recreation programs serving people with disabilities. An expert in design and implementation of integrated outdoor programs, Greg has developed outdoor policies, written staff training manuals, adapted outdoor curriculum, developed adaptive equipment, and published numerous articles and a book on integrated outdoor programming. He has personally instructed over 200 wilderness canoeing adventures involving persons with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities.
Under Greg's direction, Wilderness Inquiry has received many awards, including the Organization of the Year Award from the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (1988), special recognition from the White House (1989) and the Chair’s Award from the Minnesota State Council on Disability (1998). Greg has a BA in psychology from St. John’s University (1978), Collegeville, MN, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota (1991).
Sarah Milligan-Toffler, Associate Director, has been with Wilderness Inquiry since 1990. She has expertise in resource development and directed WI’s first capital campaign, which raised $2 million dollars for a new facility and staff housing. She led the growth of WI’s annual contributions from $100,000 annually to more than $900,000 in 2007. Sarah also has expertise in financial controls and general office systems development and management; she's responsible for developing WI's intranet and revolutionizing office productivity.
Lee Friedman, Director of Business Operations, is proud and excited to be a part of Wilderness Inquiry. Before joining WI's staff team in 2007, Lee was a partner in the law firm of Briggs and Morgan, as well as a member of the staff of the 1991 International Special Olympics Games. At WI, Lee has directed the organization's activities and systems in a variety of areas including financial management, human resources, risk management, permits and reservations, and facility management. He also provides leadership in sales, marketing, and strategic partnering, as well as in the management of WI's Gateway program. Lee looks forward to every opportunity to hit the trail with WI participants and staff.
Andrew Walz, Program and Technology Director, has managed WI's IT systems and directed WI's Share the Adventure program since 2003. He started with WI as a trail guide after graduating from the University of Minnesota's Institute of Technology. A rare breed of techo-geek and outdoorsman, he developed several iterations of WI's website and database system and planned hundreds of WI trips. Andy has also personally led WI trips all over the planet, developed new programs in Africa and Australia, and helped train more than 100 new staff members. Andy's commitment to servant leadership and his problem-solving abilities have helped WI surpass its goals and grow year after year.
