Wilderness Inquiry is unique in its purposeful approach
to integrated outdoor adventures.

On one end of the outdoor adventure spectrum, there are numerous non-profits whose mission is to serve one facet of society, like camps for urban youth or for people with a certain disability. On the other end of the spectrum, there are many businesses that cater to able-bodied people with the economic resources to afford an adventure travel vacation. Both types of organizations are focused on serving their distinct, homogeneous populations.

Wilderness Inquiry pulls from all walks of life, and offers a far richer experience for participants because of this diversity.

By design, Wilderness Inquiry’s trips break down barriers and allow people to see each other as humans.

Proven Methods
Inclusion is Wilderness Inquiry’s point of differentiation. We make connections and build bridges that historically have been difficult to achieve in day-to-day society. There are four components of our proven, award-winning methodology:

  1. Take a broadly popular activity, like outdoor adventures
  2. Enlist voluntary participants with a variety of backgrounds and skills
  3. Put them in a situation where success requires cooperation
  4. Provide support so that everyone can participate as equals without changing the fundamental nature of the outdoor adventure

Benefits
Besides supporting the goal of equality and equal opportunity, WI’s inclusive trips offer numerous other benefits. 25 years of research shows that people who participate in integrated outdoor recreation reported:

  • Significantly greater capacity to develop
        and sustain positive relationships.
  • Greater openness to new life possibilities,
in employment, education, and general life
        situations.
  • Increased ability to live independently,
        including mobility, initiative, and self-control.
  • Stronger family relationships and increased
        commitment to mutual family goals.
  • Greater appreciation of the environment.
